"Project Based Learning integrates knowing and doing. Students learn knowledge and elements of the core curriculum, but also apply what they know to solve authentic problems and produce results that matter. PBL students take advantage of digital tools to produce high quality, collaborative products. PBL refocuses education on the student, not the curriculum—a shift mandated by the global world, which rewards intangible assets such as drive, passion, creativity, empathy, and resiliency. These cannot be taught out of a textbook, but must be activated through experience." Thomas Markham

How does it work

Choosing projects we always work crosscurriculur meaning that each project includes several subjects, for example languages, music, science, arts, geography, history etc.

A large proportion of the content in the corners in languages (English, Catalan and Castillian) stems from the end products, -the presentation of the project.

Each project starts with a planning fase, continues to a working fase and ends with a presentation.

The presentation can be written, oral, a theatre play, a video, a radio program or montage, a planned discussion as well as many other things.

In the process of reaching the end product,- the presentation, pupils will need to search for information (online, books etc.) write (in all three languages), prepare on laptops, study in the microscope, make 3D models, interview people, calculate statistic, set up equipment etc. etc.

The general work is done during project hours, but working with grammar and developing the  texts or presentations, studying specific sciences and calculating will be done in the  corners/workshops in the early part of the morning. This continuancy of subjects, - using the projects as the actual base of working with languages and grammar helps keeping pupils motivated.

Example, WW2 as a project

In this project the pupils have chosen to make different 3D presentations to illustrate the different components of WW2. For each piece they would have to write an exlanation attached to their model in all three languages. The project covers subjects of art and design, English, Spanish and Catalan history and geograhy. They will have searched for information and have had to read in all three languages.

An example of a project made about the prehistoric times.

In this project the pupils covers the subjects of arts, languages, history. The presentation for some of the pupils have been an exhibition of cave paintings, others have made a dinosaur museum and some 3D models. With each presentation pupils are expected to explain the content to their peers and teachers.
